860 Private Alfred Henry Hulls 28th Battalion and later the 2nd Pioneer Battalion was born on in May 1869, in Victoria, and had just turned 47 years old when he died on 29 July 1916, in France, at Pozieres. He married Hannah Mabel Brown in 1888. They had two children during their marriage.

Their son,  6/903 Private Alfred Henry Hulls 1st Battalion Canterbury Regiment NZEF was killed in action 27 December 1917 age 27. Listed on the Commemorative Roll.

Prior to enlisting in the army Alfred was working in the West Australian Goldfields and before leaving for overseas he buried two watches, a fob chain, an 1898 football medallion and a locket engraved “A. Hulls” in a tin beside the railway line 130 km north of Kalgoorlie. The tin was discovered by gold prospector Chris Deavin in 2005 and the items were returned to his descendants
