Jack Broadhurst was the son of John Preston Broadhurst and Hannah Broadhurst, of West Kogarah, Sydney, New South Wales. His family was from England, Jack having been born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. He had come to Australia when he was about 14 years of age, during 1912.
His older brother, 816 Pte. Maurice Broadhurst, an original member of the 18th Battalion AIF, was killed in action during the futile attack on Hill 60, 22 August 1915, aged 20 years.
Jack served at Fromelles with the 55th Battalion and survived. He was killed in action near Doignes, France on 2 April 1917. The 55th Battalion captured the village on this day.
