Son of Sidney Varley and Mary Varley nee Brayshaw of Woodland Park Road, Heading Bay, Leeds, England.
Between 1902 and 1907 Brayshaw served his motor mechanic apprenticeship with Vickers & Sons of Maxim, England
Commenced return to Australia on 15 May 1919 aboard HT Orontes disembarking on 28 June 1919
