Served bravely during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

67 years ago today, on the 3rd January 1955, Private John Powell (M.M.), 13th Battalion (Reg No-4273), wheeler (Newcastle Coal Mining Company, A Pit), from Wilton Street, Merewether, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 67. CONGREGATIONAL-2CNE. 36.

Born at Sydney, New South Wales on the 16th October 1887 to Rees and Catherine Powell, John enlisted August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 22.5.1917 (trench fever).
Awarded Military Medal 12.5.1918.
John returned home May 1919, being discharged on the 12th July 1919.

Mr. Powell’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates (unveiled on the 12th March 1921, 322 names originally inscribed, 44 Fallen, 335 names now inscribed, 51 Fallen), Merewether Public School Roll of Honor, Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Tighes Hill Public School Honor Roll, Tighes Hill Methodist Church Roll of Honour and the Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1919 WAR label in remembrance of John’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Older brother William Henry (18th Battalion, Reg No-5391, born 1885, died 7.2.1936, Sydney, N.S.W., Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance) also served 1st A.I.F.
