3478 Private Robert Bell Burns, 2nd Battalion AIF, died of wounds, Christmas Day 1916, at the age of 25. He had been badly wounded on Christmas Eve and died in the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance the next day.

His younger brother, 2562 Sergeant John Burns 4th Battalion had already been killed in action, at Pozieres, 5 months previous, 22-27 July 1916. He was 21 years old.

The brothers were two of the five children of John Burns and Ethel Alexandra Reid Burns, of Chatswood, NSW but had been born in Hawthorn, Victoria.
