Oswald Andrew Rixon was born on the 13th of January 1895, in Khancoban, New South Wales, a small town near the border of Victoria. He was a son to his father Andrew Rixon who lived at Brigenbrong, New South Wales. His religion was Church of England and, his occupation before the war was a Station Hand.

Oswald enlisted for the war on the 16th of February 1916, he was allocated the Regimental Number 5445. His rank upon enlistment was a Private and, he was a part of the 8th Battalion, 17th Reinforcement. He attended camp at Broadmedows where his unit was trained for the war. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on the 4th of April, 1916 on the HMAT A14 Euripides.
