William James ANTTELA was born in Calliope, Gladstone, Queensland on 24th January, 1896

His parents were John Andrew ANTTELA and Agnes WATT

He had served previously in the CMF, 2 years 3A and 1 year 3rd Infantry before he enlisted in Gladstone on 19th August, 1915 - he embarked with the 15th Infantry Battalion, 14th Reinforcements on the ship HMAT Wandilla on 31st January, 1916 from Brisbane

William was wounded several times & on the last occasion he suffered from gun shot wounds to his right leg which had to be amputated - he died 3 days later on 10th June, 1917 at the 2nd Casualty Clearing Station & is buried in the Baillieu Communal Cemetery Extension

The inscription reads as follows -

"THE LORD GAVE AND THE LORD HATH TAKEN AWAY"

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial and he was awarded the British War Medal & the Victory Medal.
