Biography

Before joining the Army he trained at Adelaide University in Law, and was articled to C.L. Jessop, Solicitor. He attended school at St Peters College.

From the book Fallen Saints -  George Selway of Glenelg South Australia was born in Adelaide and during his time at St Peter's College served three years as a senior cadet. After leaving school he studied law and was an articled clerk to Charles Lewis Jessop, solicitor of Shierlaw and Jessop, National Mutual Building Adelaide and serving part time in the 78th Infantry Battalion, Citizens Force.

He enlisted on 5 March 1917 and joined the 20th quota of reinforcements for the 27th Battalion at the end of July. After completing their initial training at Mitcham Camp in late October this quota travelled by train to Melbourne and sailed from there aboard HMAT Aeneas on 31 October.  After disembarkation at Devonport, England on 27 December they marched into the 6th Training Battalion, Fovant; on 1 April they sailed for France and were taken on the battalion’s strength five days later. During the early hours of 23 June while in the battalion was in Sailly sector enemy aircraft were very active.

–one plane dropping two bombs on the Ration dump killing two men and wounding five others. The reason for so few casualties occurring is due to the fact the NCOs in charge of ration parties  did not allow their men to come out of the Adelaide C.T. (Communications trench) [1]

On 23 June, 6833 Private George Selway was admitted to the 61st Casualty Clearing Station suffering from multiple bomb wounds to the right leg and left knee joint. He was transferred to 5th Casualty Clearing Station on 25 June but died there that day; he was 21 years of age.
