John Duncan McLeod was born in Fairlie, N.Z. Moved over to Queensland. He worked as a survey hand before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force at age 28 and served with the 9 Infantry Battalion - 1 to 9 Reinforcements, was a signaller, in the 4th of the 9th Btn, 1st Contg. John starts his diary with details on his enlistment at Rockhampton on 4 Jan. 1915.
