Andrew Beavis Underwood, a World War One soldier, was born on December 23, 1874, in Gumeracha, South Australia. Andrew had a brother named William Beavis Underwood and he married Elizabeth Gertrude BENNETT in South Australia on 29th January 1910. T
On the 8th of March 1916, Andrew made the noble decision to join the fight for their country. Enlisting in the 50th Battalion. They embarked on a ship called HMAT A60 Aeneas from Adelaide, South Australia, on the 11th of April 1916.
Andrew's Battalion the 50th, part in a number of important battles during World War I. From the Noreuil and Dernancourt attacks to the Battles of Amiens, Messines, Polygon Wood, the battle of Ypres, and Villers Bretonneux, he demonstrated outstanding bravery and resilience on the front lines. Andrew survived a bullet wound to the back throughout these battles, serving as a constant reminder of their efforts.
in England, Andrew faced additional challenges. His devotion to service nearly cost him his life when he had a heart attack during the time of war. Andrew was later discharged from the military due to authorities' concerns about Andrew's heart conditions, and after his discharge, Andrew returned to Australia as a war hero and died of natural causes at the age of 83 on July 21, 1958, and was buried in AIF Cemetery, West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia Section: KO, Road: 11A, Site No: 12.
