Henry left Adelaide with the 43rd Battalion on HMAT A 30 Borda on 23 June 1917. From England they proceeded to France on 18 Decenber. He was gassed in the attack on the village of Rony on 26 May 1918- the same day and action as Edwin Clark. After receiving medical treatment he rejoined his unit. Henry was wounded in action again on 1 September when he was shot in the right shoulder. As a result he was invalided to England and admitted to the 1st Stationary General Hospital at Dartford on 4 September. Henry returned to Australia on the Plassy and was discharged as medically unfit on 28 May 1919.
Henry Fountain died on7 October 1963 aged 74 and was buried at Woodside Uniting Church Cemetery.
