William was born in Townsville on 20 Jan 1892, son of James Norris and Mary Pridmore.

Private Norris enlisted in Townsville on 30 Oct 1915 aged 24, and embarked from Sydney per RMS “Mooltan” on 12 Apr 1916.

 He served on the Western Front with the 26th Battalion AIF and the 31st Battalion AIF. He was wounded in action on 8 Aug 1918 in the Battle of Amiens with gas poisoning.

He returned to Australia on 22 May 1919, and was discharged 6 Sep 1919.

He was a locomotive fireman.  He died in Townsville on 9 Jul 1975 aged 83, and is buried in West End Cemetery.
