Eldest of the three brothers (Robert, David and Samuel) who served in the Australian Army, Major General Robert Edward Jackson CMG, DSO, MiD served in the Australian Army for almost four decades. Commissioned to the Commonwealth Cadet Corps in 1907, he was commissioned into the Permanent Military Forces in 1911, and retired on 2 January 1946. Captain Jackson enlisted in the AIF on 20 November 1914 and was attached to 10th Light Horse Regiment on 17 February 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle on board Transport A47 Mashobra. At the end of WWI Lieutenant Colonel Jackson remained in the Armed Forces until retirement, and was awarded the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, the Distinguished Service Order, was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour (France) and Mentioned in Despatches (MiD) on four occasions. Major General Jackson retired on 2 January 1946.

Robert was born at Crows Nest on the Darling Downs, QLD in 1886, second of six children of Samuel Bowman Jackson (b1855 in County Antrim, Ireland) and Sarah Haire Woodland (b1860 in County Mayo, Ireland). Samuel and Sarah met in Dublin, where they were both training as Teachers. Following their marriage in 1888, the couple immigrated to Australia, arriving in Brisbane in 1880 on board the John Elder. Samuel and Sarah lived in Bundaberg and Crows Nest, where Samuel was a Teacher and Farmer. In 1906 they moved their family to Western Australia, initially to Marradong before settling in Perth - Samuel was a Teacher.

Robert trained as a Teacher in Perth before joining the Commonwealth Cadet Corps, and then enlisting in the Army. In 1914 in Perth he married Edith Margeurite Vautin (b1891 in Warracknabeal, Victoria), and the couple was in England in 1915 when their son was born. In 1924 Robert (a Lieutenant Colonel at the Staff College in Camberley, Surrey) and Edith returned to Melbourne with their three children on board the Ormuz. The family lived in Fremantle, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney as Robert served in the Army. Robert was District Commanding Officer 5th Military District at retirement in 1946, and was living in Sydney before his death at Heidelberg Military Hospital in 1948. Edith died in 1987. Their three children (Donald, Dawn and Oliver) also had distinguished careers in the Australian Army.
