The 42nd name inscribed is Private Alfred Morton James.

On the Friday morning of the 24th February 1950, the funeral was held at Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W. for Private Alfred Morton James, referred to as Mort, 4th Battalion (Reg No-1459), labourer from Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales and Minmi Road, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 58 years 4 months. Ashes interred Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W., Drive Wall G/206, date unknown.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 28th September 1891 to Francis John or Frank, died 4.4.1900, Minmi, N.S.W., age 48, buried at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Right Hand Side, Section 24, Plot 007, from Cornish Row, Minmi, New South Wales, and Emily James nee Griffiths, re-married to Robert Ferguson 1905, Minmi, N.S.W., Robert died 25.2.1936, Carrington Street, West Wallsend, N.S.W., age 80, buried at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W. with 1st wife Maggie who died 11.10.1894, age 32, Left Hand Side, Section 18, Plot 028, their son James Ferguson, Sergeant, 56th Battalion (Machine Gun Section, Reg No-2821), died of wounds 29th September 1917, age 27, not memorialised at gravesite, memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery, Emily died 24.7.1936, West Wallsend, N.S.W., age 78, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Right Hand Side, Section 24, Plot 007, from Government Road, West Wallsend, N.S.W.; husband of Ruby Vivyenne James nee Lawson, married 1920, Wallsend, N.S.W., re-married to Robert Charlton Robinson 1965, Wallsend, N.S.W., Ruby died 1.3.1993, Waratah, N.S.W., age 96, ashes interred Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W. Mort enlisted on the 22nd January 1916 with the 34th Battalion, age 24 years 3 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.

Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 16.9.1916.

Taken on Strength 4th Battalion 18.3.1917.

Admitted to hospital 7.1.1917 (trench feet), 8.2.1917 (mumps).

Granted leave to England from 15.11.1917 to 5.12.1917 and 27.11.1918 to 13.12.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 31.3.1919.

Admitted to ship's hospital at sea 2.4.1919, not stated.

Mort arrived home invalided on the 14th May 1919, being discharged on the 1st July 1919.

Not officially commemorated.

Mort’s name has also been inscribed on the Wallsend Soldiers' Memorial, unveiled on the 24th May 1919, and the Wallsend Municipal & District Roll of Honor.

I would like to see poppies placed at Mort’s plaque in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
