Add my storyBiography
No. 1884 Bill O’Donnell was a (horse) truck driver living in the south-west corner of the city (not unaquainted with the law …) who married Elizabeth O’Leary in St Francis Xavier’ Cathedral Victoria Square at age 19. The couple had 5 children.
Born in Broken Hill, NSW, in June 1888. He enlisted at Adelaide on 29 May 1916 and arrived in France in November 1916 with the 41st Battalion, and the following July was shelled and gassed at Armentieres, dying 5 days later on 4 August 1917 aged 27 – he had been at the front for less than 8 months.
His widow eventually received his rosary beads and other personal items, and a pension of 15 shillings per week.
