20 year old Horace Brown served on Gallipoli with the 19th Battalion from August 1915 until the evacuation. He transferred to the 5th Machine Gun Company in early 1916 and was slightly wounded at Pozieres. He was fighting with 2nd Machine Gun Battalion when he was hit in the head with a piece of shrapnel on the 15 April 1918. He returned to his unit in July 1918 and was eventually returned to Australia during February 1919. He lived in Moss Vale for many years and was an active member of many community and ex servicemen's associations.

His 23 year old brother, 3279 Private Ernest Angus Brown 9th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Pozieres 21 August 1916.
