Biography contributed by Evan Evans

Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

63 years ago today, on the 4th January 1957, Lance Corporal George Norman, 9th Battalion (Reg No-2388), clipper from Abermain Street, Abermain, New South Wales and Rawson Street, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. ANGLICAN 3-194. 28.

Born at Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales on the 7th February 1894 to William and Sophia Norman of Church Street, Wickham, New South Wales; husband of Margaret Ellen Norman nee O'Neil (married 1923, Toronto, N.S.W., died 1955, also sleeping here), George enlisted August 1915 with the 31st Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 13.5.1918 (SW chest, head and arm), 19.7.1918 (shell wound, left thigh - , 23.8.1918 (gas shell poisoning, mild), George returned home February 1919, being discharged medically unfit (invalided, effort syndrome) on the 27th March 1919.

Mr Norman’s name has been inscribed on the Abermain War Memorial (photo, unveiled on the 8th November 1919, 185 names inscribed, 36 Fallen).
I recently located George resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so I will erect a cross at the gravesite to honour his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.

I shall also submit an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore his honour and dignity.
Lest We Forget.
