Gordon was born in Glasgow in 1890, and was the seventh son of Mr. John Paterson, now residing at Croydon. Arriving in Australia about 10 years ago he entered the service of the Sydney Morning Herald on January 4, 1914, being empolyed in the engineering department.
He enlisted in January 1915, in the Field Artillery as a Gunner, but was soon promoted to the rank of Bombadier. He took part in a considerable number of important engagements, including the fighting at Messines and Armentieres, and was gassed, which necessitated hosptial treatment for four months. Then he joined the Australian Flying Corps as a second rate mechanic, being graded within a few months as a first class mechanic. On August 21, 1918 he met with a severe accident, being struck by an aeroplane propellar, which smashed his arm and leg, besides causing other injuries.
He returned to Australia in May 1919.
