Henry Gordon Smith was the son of Charles Henry and Jessie Shaw Smith, of Footscray, Victoria.

His younger brother 941 Private Harold Roy Smith 29th Battalion AIF was later killed in action on the Somme, France, 24 November 1916, aged 23.

H.G. Smith only landed on Gallipoli on 30 July 1915 and was killed during the August offensive, less than a fortnight later.
