A Hero memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

Private Sydney (or Sidney) Stanley Taylor, 56th Battalion (Reg No-3274), hairdresser from Hunter Street, Merewether, New South Wales, died of wounds on the 13th April 1918 at Villers-Bretonneux, age 28.

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 20th February 1890 to John Samuel (died 1898) of Patrick Street, Merewether, N.S.W., and Elizabeth (died 1936) Taylor of "Suevic", Patrick Street, Merewether, New South Wales, Sydney enlisted August 1915 with the 20th Battalion at Holsworthy, N.S.W., and was wounded in action on the 8th April 1918.

Sydney is resting at Namps-au-Val British Cemetery, France. Plot II Row C Grave 21.

Mr Taylor’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill St. John's Anglican Church Honor Roll, The Junction Soldiers' Monument, Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates, Book of Gold, Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

Sydney has been memorialised at his parent’s gravesite at Sandgate Cemetery, and I have placed poppies in remembrance of their son’s supreme sacrifice for God, King and Country. ANGLICAN 1-40. 17.
