Herbert Augustus Kingsley/Kingsbury BUTLER was born in January, 1871 in Newstead, Victoria

His parents were Edmund Charles BUTLER and Augusta Mary SIRCUM who married in Newstead in 1867

Herbert enlisted on 11th February, 1902 (SN2270) with the 4th Australian Commonwealth Horse to serve in the Second Boer War - he embarked with the Battalion Staff & Victorian Units on the transport ship Templemore on the 26th March, 1902 -he served for 6 months & was awarded the Queens Medal - date of return not known

On 30th September, 1914 he re-enlisted in Melbourne for WW1 & embarked with the 7th Infantry Battalion, 2nd reinforcements on the ship Clan Macgillivray on 2nd February, 1915

He was reported missing which was later changed to Killed in Action on 8th May, 1915 at Gallipoli - he was buried at Cape Helles but the location of his grave is not known

His name is memorialised on the Helles Memorial, the Australian War Memorial, the 1914-18 Honour Board in Williamstown, Victoria and the Melton Cenotaph in Victoria - he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal
