John Andrew MINNIS (Service Number 173) was born in 1890 in Petersham, Sydney. On his enlistment forms he stated that he was a motor engineer. He was given leave from the Railways on 24th August 1914, when he enlisted in the AIF. He then embarked at Sydney on 20th October 1914 on HMAT A14 ‘Euripides’.
On 5th April 1915, he proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Forces at the Gallipoli Peninsula. He was admitted to hospital not long after on Gallipoli on 1st July 1915.
He was discharged on the same day. On 23rd September 1915, he was appointed Temporary Corporal in Mudros on the Greek island of Lemnos. Two months later, he was promoted to Sergeant. He was still in Mudros at the time.
After embarking at Lemnos, he disembarked at Alexandria (Egypt) on 7th January 1916. He proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Forces, disembarking at Marseilles on 28th March 1916.
After four months in the field in France, he was killed in action on 23rd July 1916.
Not many details are recorded of his death, but was 26 when he died. He is commemorated at Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France.
Following his death, his mother was sent some of his personal items, including letters, photos, a writing pad, and a medal. She also received his medals – the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.
