Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Alexander McBain was Born in 1884 in Gum Farm, Stewart's Range. He was brought up on the land, and followed sheep farming. He enlisted for the Great War in 1914, being attached to the 32nd Battalion.

The 32nd Bn embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on two ships, HMAT A2 'Geelong', on 18 November 1915, and HMAT A13 'Katuna', on 24 November 1915. The Embarkation Roll Does not distinguish between these ships, and it is therefore not possible from the Embarkation Roll to ascertain on which ship and individual embarked.

After arriving in Egypt in early 1916, McBain was transferred to the 54th Battery of the 14th Field Artillery Brigade and served through the war with this unit.

On his return from active service overseas, McBain acquired a grazing property near Lucindale, where he carried on sheep farming successfully. In 1923 he married Miss Anna Patricia Sluter. McBain died on 2 July 1942 at Naracoorte Hospital, after an illness extending over three months. His remains were interred in the Narracoorte cemetery. According to his obituary, McBain was survived by his wife, and one, young child, Anna. He was also survived by three sisters, Mrs. R. C. Stuart, and Misses Ellen C. and Isabella McBain (Narracoorte) and two brothers, Messrs. J. A. McBain, of Stewart's Range, and B. J. McBain, of Crower, Lucindale. Two brothers, Messrs. Charlie and Donald McBain, pre-deceased him.
