Son of Alfred Howes and Annie Howes of 'Coleytong', Lang Road, Centennial Park, NSW.
On 19 April 1915 he was granted a temporary commission in the Imperial Army with the Indian Army of Reserve Officers with the rank of Lieutenant. He had previously served with the 2nd Queen Victoria's Own Raiputa Light Infantry
