Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Joseph Ronald McLean was one of four brothers who served in the AIF during WW1, the sons of John and Annie Sophia McLean, of Railway Heights, Casino, New South Wales.

Joseph’s younger brother 4869 Pte. Thomas Alexander McLean 17th Battalion AIF was later killed in action on 8 August 1918, aged 22.

Joseph Ronald McLean enlisted under his correct name during September 1914. He was given the regimental number 923 in the 15th Battalion. He was returned to Australia with myocarditis during August 1915 and was discharged on 18 September 1915 with a pension of two pounds per week.

He enlisted again under the name Joseph Munro during September 1916. A few months later he made a statuary declaration stating his real name was Joseph Ronald Munro. He was taken on strength of the 47th Battalion on 8 May 1917 in France. He was promoted to Corporal only a few weeks before he died of wounds to the chest on 2 May 1918.
