Son of Francis Edward and Matilda Cleveland of Anglo Road, Greenwich, NSW formerly of 11 Justin Street, Leichhardt, NSW.

Brother of Grover Spencer Cleveland of 2 Park Road, St Leonards, NSW who returned to Australia on 25 January 1919 having served with the 1st Battalion and Frederick Simpson Cleveland who was killed in action on 20 September 1917 while serving with the 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion and was buried in the Menin Road South Cemetery Plot 11, Row E, Grave 23. Commemorated in the Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, NSW
