Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From 52nd Battalion AIF

On 17 April 1918, the 52nd was in position between Vaux and Vaire, with the 4th Division AIF in reserve. The 2nd Division AIF took over the line near Dernancourt. The 3rd Division AIF was to the south between the Ancre and Somme Rivers, with the 5th Division AIF on its right flank with its lines across the Somme. The AIF was in control of approximately 17 miles of the Fourth Army’s front. One man died on this day:
Private Thomas White (#2005a), 29, from Mackay QLD

White was a labourer when he enlisted in January 1916. He embarked with the 3rd reinforcements to the 52nd in early May 1916 and arrived in England around June/July. His service record is missing so details are limited.

It appears he married a Violet Mary Holloway of Trowbridge on 26 September 1917 at Melksham, Wiltshire. These locations are close to the Australian training camps on Salisbury Plain. A son, Thomas, was born on 26 July 1918, so Thomas senior was certainly the father. A daughter, Peggy Armistice White was born on 11 November 1921 according to Ancestry records. However, she could not have been Thomas senior’s daughter, if these dates are correct. Thomas senior is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, France
Thomas’ brother, Private William WHITE (#317), served with the 41st Bn and returned to Australia in April 1918
