Eldest of three brothers who served in the Army (Harold in WWI and Wilfred in WWII), Private William Job Stanley Bushby (Service No:4303) served five years with the Naval Reserve before enlisting in the AIF on 8 May 1917. Private Bushby was attached to 2 Pioneers Battalion on 30 October 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Devonport on board HMAT A60 Aeneas. Private Bushby served on the Western Front, and was attached to 48th Infantry Battalion on 3 May 1918 when he WiA in France - bullet wound to shoulder. Private Bushby embarked from England for Fremantle on 12 July 1919 on board HT City of Exeter, and was attached to 48th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 16 September 1919.
Stan was born in Greta in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales in 1896, eldest of six children of William James Bushby (b1868 in Cumbria, England) and Sarah (Annie) Jane Buhl (b1872 in West Maitland, New South Wales). William immigrated in 1880, arriving in Sydney with his parents and siblings. William (a Carpenter) and Annie married in 1895 in West Maitland, and lived in the Hunter Valley and Sydney before moving to Western Australia in the early 1900s. William and Annie settled in Fremantle, where they raised their family and William was a Carpenter.
Stan worked as a Cooper in South Fremantle before enlisting in the AIF in 1917. Following his Discharge from the Army, Stan was working as a Cooper in Fremantle in 1921 when he married his first wife Effie Eileen Meldrum (b1904 in Fremantle, Western Australia). They had separated by 1923 and divorced in 1927. Both remarried - Stan in 1930 in Perth to Eliza (Lila) Turbett (b1908 in Brunswick, Western Australia). Stan and Lila settled in Perth, where they raised their family and Stan worked as a Cooper until retirement, when they moved to Safety Bay. Lila died in 1976 and Stan in 1977.
