Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal
'For conspicuous gallantry on 9th August 1915 at Lone Pine (Dardanelles). He was a bomber and as he was about to throw a bomb two of the enemy's bombs fell close to him. Having thrown his own, with great presence of mind and courage he picked up and threw back one of the enemy's bombs, which burst on leaving his hand, and smothered the other with a sandbag. At that time the trench was fully occupied, and his gallant action undoubtedly prevented serious loss.'
Was charged with AWOL, escaping arrest and striking a person in whose custody he was placed.
Sentenced to 2 hears IHL
Transferred to prison.
To hospital with VD and escaped from custody whilst in hospital
Discharged from the AIF 21 July 1920 as Illegally Absent from 23 July 1919
Reported in London 16 October 1920 and granted repatriation but failed to take advantage
