Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

James Kincraig Lyall was 6 foot 3 inches and weighed 13 stone when he enlisted in Western Australia during 1914.

Trooper Lyall was involved in the charge at the Nek at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915, as a member of B Troop A Squadron of the 10th Light Horse Regiment. He was wounded on this day, gunshot wounds to his left arm and leg. He was evacuated to St Andrews Hospital on Malta a week later. He returned to Gallipoli during October 1915 and was promoted to Corporal, then promoted to Second Lieutenant a month later.

After the evacuation from Gallipoli, he was promoted to Lieutenant. He was decorated with the Military Cross and Mentioned in Despatches for his gallantry and leadership near Romani during August 1916. He was slightly wounded again at Es Salt during May 1918. In late 1918 he was promoted to Captain and returned to Australia during July 1919.

His brother, Captain William McIntosh McIntyre M.C. also served in the 10th Light Horse Regiment. They were the sons of John W. Lyall, who was the manager of the Wilgarup Karri and Jarrah Co., which was a huge timber business at the time.
