Son of John Arthur Upton and Martha Upton of Washwood Heath Road, Tatley, Birmingham, England.

16 September 1914 - enlisted at Rosebery Park, NSW, with the 13th Battalion and with the rank of Private.

29 May 1915 - awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal. Citation reads: On 25th April, 1915, during operations near Kaba Tepe, for great bravery in bringing wounded into shelter, and again on 2nd May, after being shot through the foot, in continuing to defend his trench until again wounded.

11 November 1916 - transferred to the Imperial Camel Corps at Moascar

14 May 1917 - promoted to 2nd Lieutenant at Cairo

24 August 1917 - promoted to Lieutenant

1 July 1918 - transferred to the 14th Light Horse Regiment but detached to 1st Squadron Australian Flying Corp for instruction in Aerial Observation until 30 August 1918

26 December 1918 - commenced return to Australia aboard HT Burma disembarking on 29 January 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney

3 March 1919 - discharged at the 2nd Military District
