Patrick Ryan worked hard as a stretcher bearer throughout most of late 1918 and his recommendation for the Military Medal states, 'Private Ryan acted as a stretcher bearer throughout the whole of the summer and autumn offensive, and in every action, he was conspicuous for his gallantry and devotion to duty. Considerations of personal danger never once deterred him from his immediate performance of his duty to the wounded. He has undoubtedly been the means of saving lives and alleviating suffering, and he has always been an inspiring example to other stretcher bearers and his comrades generally.'
His two brothers both lost their lives, 2671 Pte. Andrew Ryan 3rd Battalion being killed at Pozieres in 1916 and 974 Pte. John Ambrose Ryan 2nd Battalion was killed in action 18 September 1918, aged 27.
