Masterton was with a party of about a dozen men of the 14th Battalion, led by Lieutenant Luscombe, who were captured by the Turks while trying to attack Hill 971 on the 8 August 1915. He was repatriated to Alexandria Egypt in November 1918 and returned to Australia the same month.
