Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Bartley Liston was the youngest of five children of John Patrick McHenry (b1863 in Ipswich, QLD) and Mary Louisa Conwell (b1862 in Ballarat, Victoria). John - a Teamster - and Mary married in 1887 in Melbourne, Victoria and relocated to Perth, Western Australia by 1891.

Bartley was a Soldier - a Staff Sergeant Major Instructional Staff - in 1917 when he enlisted with the Australian Army (as Liston Bartholomew). He served in France with 11th Infantry Battalion (Sergeant; Service No:7564) and was WiA in August 1918. His mother wrote to the Army on 10 September 1918 '... can you let me know if he is seriously wounded you know I am his mother. He is the only son. I trust it is not dangerously so please let me know as soon as you can. He was a real good son so he is sure to be a noble Soldier and man and I hope to God he is spared to come home to me'. (National Archives Australia). Discharged in in April 1919, Bartley returned to Perth WA where he was a Drill Instructor. In 1934 he married May Fallon (b1896 in Perth, WA) and they moved to Horse Hill, where Bartley was a Storekeeper until 1943 when he and May moved to Guildford and managed a Newsagent and Tobacconist store. By the mid 1950s Bartley and May had relocated to Scarborough in Perth, WA where Bartley was a Businessman. Bartley died in 1965 and May in 1967.
