Ernest was the third of eight children of John Thomas Smith (b1849 in Perth WA) and Ellen Christina Edwards (b1851 in Perth WA). John (a Sanitation Worker and Cleaner) and Ellen married in 1870 in Perth WA.

Ernest was a Labourer in Perth WA in 1898 when he married Catherine Eliza Frances Cheeseman (b1897 in London, England). In August 1915 Ernest enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:3964) and served in France with 11th Infantry Battalion. He was WiA in 1916 (GSW left hand) and Discharged in November 1917. Two sons served in WWI - Stanley Edward (Private; Service No:6493) enlisted in 1918 and Ernest Edward (Private; Service No:1587) was KiA in France in 1916.

Ernest and Catherine lived in North Perth, WA where Ernest worked as a Driver. He died in 1941 and Catherine in 1944.
