Biography contributed by Yvonne Wilson

Tom was born at 105 Church Lane Gorton, near Manchester, England to Reuben and Mary Dean.  He was christened on 23rd Feb 1898 at the Church of England. Tom had 5 elder brothers, one younger brother and a sister. He attended the Gorton Municipal School.  When he was about 14 1/2 years old he sailed from England to Sydney to join his uncle and cousin Clarence Herbert Dakin.  The two boys learnt how to become orchardists. Tom then moved south to Nethercote on the far south coast of New South Wales (near Eden) where he worked as a farm labourer for Hugh Kelly.

When the Eden policeman held a recruitment drive at Nethercote Hall, Tom was  the only person to volunteer.  Although he was only 17 1/2 he added two years to his age and stated on his forms that he was 19 yrs and 7 months.  He was 18 years and 9 months when he died.

Tom was 5 feet 7 1/2 in tall, weighed 140 lbs with brown hair and hazel eyes.

His cousin Clarence had already enrolled in March 1915 and later died 15th April 1917.

Tom is remembered on the Eden Cenotaph and Roll of Honour and  the Nethercote Roll of Honour
