Son of Edward Unkles and Susannah Unkles of Sunny Rock, Rosscarbery, Ireland.
7 October 1916 - enlisted with the 47th Battalion at Bundaberg, QLD with the rank of Private.
5 April 1917 - Prisoner of War, captured at Albert, France. Repatriated to England on 23 November 1918
Commenced return to Australia on 18 January 1919 aboard HT Ulysses disembarking on 18 March 1919
18 April 1919 - discharged at the 1st Military District
Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal
On 3 September 1919 George married Florence Ruby Larsen in QLD.
