Wounded in action at Fromelles, 20 July 1916 (shrapnel wound, right upper arm). Statements by witnesses said both his legs were broken as well. Taken prisoner of war; later claimed, at a debriefing statement, 20 November 1918, that the wound was not dressed for 4 days. He was transferred to Ingolstadt Camp, 24 December 1916; remained there until March 1917, when moved to Bayreuth; there until transferred to internment in Holland via Aachen, 1 June 1918. Ridley arrived in England, 18 November 1918; reported to AIF Headquarters, 20 November 1918; granted leave until 20 December 1918. Commenced return to Australia on board 'Czavita', 16 March 1919; transshipped to 'Dunluce Castle' at Alexandria, 17 April 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 15 May 1919.
