Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Edgar Fletcher was born in Keiraville, New South Wales, during 1891. His father, Abraham Fletcher, had died of injuries from a mining accident in the Bulli Colliery during 1906. His mother, Jessie, was left to raise thirteen children.

Known as ‘Ted’ to his family and friends he was landed on Gallipoli during August 1915.  In France during May 1916, he was hospitalised suffering from shell shock and then wounded more seriously a second time while fighting near Pozieres. Ted was evacuated to England with a gunshot wound to his right forearm and eventually repatriated to Australia in March 1917 and discharged.

His elder brother, 5499 Pte. John Burnett Fletcher 13th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 29 August 1916, aged 32.

His younger brother, 532 Pte. Donald McDonald Fletcher 18th Battalion AIF, was the next year killed in action on the 20 September 1917, during the Battle of Menin Road in Belgium, aged 21.

Another younger brother, Pte. Abram Fletcher 31st Battalion AIF was returned to Australia in late 1918.
