'At 9.40 p.m. 24th December, 1916, No. 2 Gun Pit was hit by a German shell, which blew portion of the pit i, burying two men who were also seriously wounded. Notwithstanding that the Battery position was being shelled and the shells dropping very close, Gunner HELEY and Sergeant BREWER with other members of the Battery immediately set to work, and after much difficulty extricated the two men.'
