Patrick Grandon was born at Cardiff, South Wales around 1876, according to the 1881 & 1891 Wales Census & information provided by his brother for the Roll of Honour, however Patrick listed his place of birth on his Attestation Papers as Middleton, Cork, Ireland.
According to information provided by his brother for the Roll of Honour, Patrick came to Australia when he was 32 years old.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 14th June, 1915 stating he was a 37 year old, single, Fireman (Seagoing) when he enlisted at Keswick, South Australia.
On 21st September, 1915 Private Patrick Grandon, Service number 2777, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on HMAT Star of England (A15) with the 12th Infantry Battalion, 9th Reinforcements.
He was taken on strength of 12th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir on 7th January, 1916.
Private Grandon proceeded to join the B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria on 29th March, 1916 & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 5th April, 1916.
On 5th July, 1916 Private Grandon was admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance in France with malignant Stomach. He was transferred to 12th Australian Casualty Clearing Station the same day. Private Grandon was transferred to Ambulance Train on 8th July, 1916 & admitted to 3rd Convalescent Depot at Camiers, France on 9th July, 1916. He embarked from Boulogne, France for England on Hospital Ship Stad Antwerpen on 9th July, 1916.
He was admitted to Northumberland War Hospital, England on 10th July, 1916 with an enlarged liver.
Private Patrick Grandon died on 11th August, 1916 at Gosforth War Hospital, England from Cancer of Stomach.
He was buried in Ashburton Roman Catholic Cemetery, Gosforth where one other WW1 Australian War Grave is located.
