101 years ago today, on the 11th April 1918, Private Ernest William Hancock, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, dynamo attendant from Aberdare Central, Cessnock, New South Wales, was killed in action at Amiens, age 19.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 15th September 1898 to George (died 1948) and Lavillia (Lavilia, Lavellia) Jane (died 1959) Hancock of Kitchener, New South Wales and 11 Melville Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. and 45 Union Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., Ernest enlisted July 1916 at Cessnock, N.S.W.

His name has been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial.

There is no memorial inscription to Ernest at his parent’s gravesite at Sandgate Cemetery, and I am unable to place a memorial cross, so I have placed poppies to honour his service and supreme sacrifice. GENERAL-30. 52.

Older brother George (Reg No-8841, enlisted as GRIMM-Joe, born 1894, died?) also served 1st A.I.F.

Older brother Alfred Edward (Reg No-2353, born 1890, died 1968) also served 1st A.I.F.

Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

106 years ago today, on the 11th April 1918, Private Ernest William Hancock, referred to as Billy, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-3114A), dynamo attendant from Aberdare Central, Cessnock, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at Amiens, age 19 years 6 months. Cause of death unknown.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 15th September 1898 to George (died 23.9.1948, Wallsend Hospital, N.S.W., age 81) of Kitchener, New South Wales (1918) and 11 Melville Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. (1921) and 45 Union Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. (1922) and 34 Creek Reserve, Boolaroo, N.S.W., and Lavillia (Livella, Lavilia, Lavellia) Jane Hancock nee Hill (died 5.5.1959, Raymond Terrace, N.S.W., age 86) of Kitchener, New South Wales and 11 Melville Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. and 45 Union Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., Billy enlisted on the 1st July 1916 at Cessnock, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.

Mr. Hancock is resting at St Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, France. Plot X Row A Grave 3.

Billy’s name has been inscribed on the Teralba Public School Roll of Honour and the Cessnock War Memorial.
Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription at the Hancock gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of the supreme sacrifice of Billy for God, King & Country. GENERAL-30. 52.

Older brother George Elven Handcock (enlisted as Joe Grimm, born 16.12.1894, Minmi, New South Wales, labourer from Central Aberdare, Cessnock, New South Wales, enlisted 20.7.1915, 1st Australian Light Horse Field Ambulance, Reg No-8841, admitted to hospital 1.1.1917 (synovitis), married Florence Whimpy 21.12.1918, Parish Church, Chalderton, England, RTA 9.9.1919, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, died 24.9.1959, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 64, not officially commemorated.

Older brother Alfred Edward Hancock (born 18.9.1890, Minmi, New South Wales, engine driver from Central Aberdare, Cessnock, New South Wales, enlisted 30.8.1915, 30th Battalion, Reg No-2353, wounded in action - 18.8.1916 (GSW chest, mild, fractured spine from high explosive shell, Mouquet Farm), RTA medically unfit 13.4.1917, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, died 25.2.1968, Boolaroo, N.S.W., age 77, not officially commemorated.
