Hubert Shea served at Gallipoli from 30 April 1915. He was evacuated with enteric during July 1915, and transferred to England about a month later. He rejoined his unit in France during August 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal a few months later.
“He was killed on February 4th in the advance in front of Gueudecourt Wood. He was on the left flank of the Coy., advanced too quickly, and was caught in our own barrage A shell blew him up, I saw his dead body. The body was buried a day or two later behind our front line not far from Gueudecourt Wood. I saw the burial. A cross was put on his grave with his name on it, I saw the cross. He belonged XIV Platoon D. Coy. He came from the country - some part of N.S.W. He was a L/Cpl. We were in the same Platoon.” -1877 Pte. C.M. Bear, D. Company 13th Battalion AIF.
Hubert’s parents were both deceased. He had been working on his uncle’s farm at Grenfell when he enlisted. His uncle, Robert Lee, received Hubert’s medals and entitlements.
