William Bismark SCHAEFFER was born in Neutral Bay , Sydney in 1888

His parents were Carl Augustus Manilius SCHAEFFER who was born in Liepzig in Germany, and Cathleen Mary Magdalene TARDY who came from Dublin in Ireland - they married in 1873 in Echuca, Victoria & later moved to New South Wales

William had served for 3 years with the AIR and 2 years with the 24th Infantry before he enlisted in Sydney on 26th August, 1914 as a Private to serve in WW1  - he embarked with the 3rd Battalion, B Company on 20th October 1914 on the HMAT Euripides

He was promoted to Sergeant on 1st September, 1914 before he left Australia and on 1st May, 1915 he was promoted to Company Sergeant Major.

William was Killed in Action on 16th May, 1915 at Gallipoli and is buried in the 4th Parade Ground Cemetery

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Waverley Soldiers Memorial 1914 -1918 - he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal.
