Thomas Kelly was born in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia. Before he enlisted into the war, he worked as a labourer. He had a high physical fitness level, so he was good at his job. Information on his family or what they did back before World War One is scarce.

Thomas Kelly's embarkation date was on the 26th of November 1917, he embarked in Melbourne on the SS Indarra. He arrived in France in April 1918 and served with the 1st Tunnelling Company through to the end of the war. Thomas returned to Australia in 1920.
