Died on this date – 5th February … Harold Hodgson was born at Settle, North Yorkshire, England on 22nd May, 1885 to parents Samuel and Ann Hodgson (nee Sutton).

Ann Hodgson, mother of Harold Hodgson, died on 6th October, 1910 at Keighley, Yorkshire, England.

According to information provided by his sister for the Roll of Honour – Harold Hodgson came to Australia when he was 25 years old.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 15th March, 1916 (as per Embarkation Roll) as a 31 year old, single, Car Builder & Wheeler from Kennedy Street, Maylands, Western Australia.

Private Harold Hodgson, Service number 5732, embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on HMAT Seang Bee (A48) on 18th July, 1916 with the 4th Infantry Brigade, 16th Infantry Battalion, 18th Reinforcements. He was promoted to rank of Provisional Corporal as from 27th July, 1916 for voyage only. Provisional Corporal Hodgson disembarked at Plymouth, England on 9th September, 1916.

Samuel Hodgson, father of Harold Hodgson, died on 9th September, 1916 at Settle, Yorkshire, England.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

He was marched in to 4th Training Battalion from Overseas Reinforcements on 10th September, 1916 & reverted to rank of Private on 10th September, 1916.

On 23rd November, 1916 Private Hodgson was marched out from 4th Training Battalion, No. 1 Camp, Codford, Wiltshire  & was marched in to A.A.S.C. (Australian Army Service Corps) Training Depot at Parkhouse, Wiltshire on 24th November, 1916.

Private Hodgson was marched out from A.A.S.C. Training Depot at Parkhouse on 10th December, 1916 & was detached to Hurdcott, Wiltshire.

He was marched in to A.A.S.C. Training Depot at Parkhouse at 27th January, 1917 from Fovant detachment (Note: some forms have recorded “detention” instead of detachment).

On 24th May, 1917 Private Hodgson was marched in to Codford, Wiltshire from Hurdcott, Wiltshire.

Private Hodgson was marched out to A.S.C. Detachment at Hurdcott from Codford Detachment on 2nd September, 1917. He was marched out to A.S.C. Detachment at Codford from Hurdcott Detachment on 6th September, 1917.

He was marched in from Boyton A.S.C Detachment on 1st June, 1918 & marched out to Fovant A.S.C. Detachment on 7th June, 1918.

Private Hodgson was written up for an Offence at Hurdcott, Wiltshire – AWL (Absent without leave) from 23.59 hrs on 31st December, 1918 to 10.00 hrs on 2nd January, 1919. Award – Admonished by Lt. G. W. Morris. He forfeited a total of 2 days’ pay.

On 30th January, 1919 Private Hodgson was sent sick to No. 2 Group Clearing Hospital at Hurdcott, Wiltshire with Influenza. He was transferred & admitted to Fovant Military Hospital, Wiltshire on 2nd February, 1919 & was reported to be seriously ill with Pneumonia on 4th February, 1919. The Hospital Admission form recorded “Pneumonia following Influenza. Very Septic – Temp 104 – Weakness.”

Private Harold Hodgson died at 16.05 hrs on 5th February, 1919 at Military Hospital, Fovant, Wiltshire, England from Influenza & Pneumonia.

A telegram was sent on 6th February, 1919 from Commandant Military Hospital, Fovant to Administrative Headquarters, London stating No. 5732 Harold Hodgson had died on 5th February, 1919. “Sister Mrs Wain, King William Hotel, Settle, Yorkshire desires body removed to Settle for private burial and transportation charges have been paid at Dinton Station. Authority is requested to remove body.”

He was buried in Holy Ascension Churchyard, Settle, North Yorkshire, England – Plot number G. 53 (private grave) and has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.
