Son of David BEDFORD and Margaret Anne BEDFORD nee MCNAUGHT, Guildford Road, Surrey Hills, Victoria
Robert enlisted on 25 March 1916 at the age of 31 years, single, with the occupation as a Postman. His address was Guildford Road Surrey Hills Victoria. Upon enlistment, Robert was appointed to the 5th Reinforcements of the 46th Battalion, being initially deployed to No 2 Battery for 3 months from May till August 1916, in Geelong.
Embarking from Melbourne on HMAT Port Sydney on 7 September 1916, Robert disembarked at Plymouth England, was based in Codford and Wilton and later transferred to France in January 1917, joining the 46th Battalion on 18 January 1917.
Robert remained with his battalion unit the Armistice in November 1918 and was then given 3 weeks leave in Paris in January 1919 and also promoted to Lance Corporal. Later, in April 1919 Robert was transferred to Sutton Veny in England, promoted again to Temporary Sergeant, prior to returning to Australia on on HMAT Frankfurt disembarking on 1 July, arriving in Australia on 20 August 1919.
