Biographical details:
Thomas did his basic training with E Coy Mitcham as a private from 28 October to 13 November 1916. He embarked the A 35 Berrima at Adelaide with the 43rd Battalion on 16 December and disembarked at Devonport, England on 16 February 1917. Upon completion of additional training at Durrington, Thomas was sent from Southampton with the 43rd to France on 9 April. He was admitted to the Aust. Army Field Ambulance and treated for debility on 29 July. Thomas attended Brigade Signal School on 12 March 1918 and rejoined the 43rd on 20 March. He was treated for varicose veins at 5 Casualty Clearing Station on 11 April.
On 16 April Thomas was admitted to hospital at Havre where he was treated for venereal disease, rejoining his unit on 15 June. After being granted leave from 9 January to 19 January 1919, Thomas returned to Australia on the HMAT Nector from Liverpool on 20 May and was discharged on 7 August 1919.
