Served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
88 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 27th June 1935, Private John Joseph Brogan, referred to as Jack, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-4538), handyman and wharf labourer from 6 off Watt Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and 20 Railway Street, Wickham, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. CATHOLIC 2-34. 117.
Born at Quirindi, New South Wales on the 1st June 1879 to John and Fanny (Frances) Brogan; husband of Annie May Brogan nee Hann (married 1912, Wickham, N.S.W., died?) of 38 Brook Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., Jack enlisted on the 26th June 1917 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on the 31st October 1917.
Wounded in action - 22.8.1918 (SW or GSW arm and left leg).
Jack was invalided home on the 29th December 1918, being discharged (premature senility & debility) on the 20th March 1919.
Mr. Brogan’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name possibly inscribed on the Hamilton Sacred Heart Church Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Jack’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
