George John Heathfield was 21 when he enlisted in the war. He was 5 foot 4 and weighed 61 kg. George had a chest measurement of 32-34 inches and his appearances were fair skin, hazel eyes and light brown hair. He was born in United Kingdom, Kent England, living with his mother Alice Heathfield. Before he enlisted in war, he was a brickmaker and on record his previous military service was with Australian Imperial Force.
George enlisted in Adelaide on the 2nd of August 1915. He served with 49th Australian Infantry Battalion. George embarked on the 2nd of December 1915 on the RMS Malwa ship. While George was at war he got wounded, sick and shot at in action. He was sent to hospital in France on 11th May, due to sickness. He was then wounded on field 26th September 1917, admitted with venereal disease, and had the influenza.
George survived war and returned on the 4/6/1919 or 4/6/1919 there was some controversy on the date of return. George got married not long after war ended, married to Mary Frances on the 15th June 1918.
